Streaked Flycatcher

La historia

This Streaked Flycatcher (Myiodynastes maculatus) perched on a vine near San Pablo de Borbur, in Boyacá, Colombia, its streaked underparts clear against the green. It feeds mostly on large insects such as cicadas, locusts and beetles, and also eats berries and other fruit, with records of it taking small lizards. It forages mostly from the forest’s middle levels to the canopy, catching most insects in midair with short sallies from a perch. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I photographed it with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 1.4x extender, at 1/90 sec, f/16, ISO 800, −1 EV. The Fura and Tena hills near town are promoted for hiking and birdwatching, with a local association running ecological tourism built around their ancestral legend.
