The Story
I photographed this Crimson-rumped Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus haematopygus) at the Kairi Lodge Natural Reserve, near Manizales, Caldas, Colombia, in February 2020. It lives in Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, mostly between 300 and 2,200 meters, in forest, forest edges and fruiting trees in pastures and gardens. It eats mainly fruit. Pairs court by singing, chasing, feeding each other and preening each other, and they usually nest in an old woodpecker hole. Its song is a series of gruff, barking notes. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 3200. Destino Caldas counts 142 bird species on Kairi’s single hectare, where gardens are planted to draw hummingbirds.
