The Story
I made this photo of a Crested Bobwhite (Colinus cristatus) at La Macarena, Meta, Colombia. It is found in northern South America, extending through Panama to just reach Costa Rica. It lives in small groups on the ground in or near thick cover. It eats buds, shoots, leaves and small invertebrates. The female is slightly browner than the male. The Sierra de la Macarena is home to about 420 bird species, along with eight species of primates. La Macarena is part of the Sierra de la Macarena and of the Macarena Special Management Area, which brings together several protected areas.
I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Crested Bobwhite as Least Concern, with a stable population.
