The Story
I photographed this Blue-headed Parrot (Pionus menstruus) at Playa Rica Turismo Comunitario, by the Putumayo River near Puerto Asís, Putumayo, Colombia. It lives in forest and semi-open country, including cultivated areas, from Costa Rica and Trinidad south to Bolivia and Brazil. It eats fruit, flowers and seeds, and sometimes grain, and it nests in tree cavities. The female incubates the eggs for about 26 days, and the chicks leave the nest about 70 days after hatching. IUCN lists it as Least Concern. It roosts communally in palms and other trees.
I used a Canon R5 with the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 2x extender for this one, at 1/90 sec, f/22, ISO 3200. Playa Rica’s community tourism promotes agrobiodiversity and nature tourism for biocultural conservation.
