The Story
I photographed this Barred Antshrike (Thamnophilus doliatus) at Finca Ecoturística San Javier, in the vereda Chucuní near Ibagué, Tolima, Colombia. It favors thick undergrowth rather than the higher parts of the forest and avoids the interior of mature forest. It eats a wide variety of insects and other arthropods, sometimes small lizards, and also takes prey that flees army ant swarms. IUCN lists it as Least Concern. It is a year-round resident.
I made this frame with a Canon R5 and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L, at 1/4000 sec, f/6.7, ISO 3200. Finca San Javier began as a pig farm in 1997 and turned to ecotourism in 2017, and today it offers guided birding and aims to help conserve the tropical dry forest around it.
