The Story
I photographed this Straight-billed Woodcreeper (Dendroplex picus) near Belén de los Andaquíes, Caquetá, Colombia, in February 2020. It lives from Panama and Trinidad across most of tropical South America, mostly below 600 meters. Its lower back, rump, flight feathers and tail are rufous-chestnut. It picks arthropods, snails and even small lizards from bark and crevices, usually alone. It nests in tree cavities and has also used fence posts, nest boxes and bromeliads. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/400 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. The town and the Fundación Tierra Viva manage the 26,812-hectare Andakí Municipal Natural Park, where studies have found 47 new species and 190 new records for Colombia.
