The Story
This Barred Antshrike (Thamnophilus doliatus) was at Hotel Waka Rural in Honda, Tolima, Colombia when I photographed it. It favors thick undergrowth and avoids the interior of mature forest. In Colombia it is found from near sea level to about 1,500 meters. It eats mainly insects, along with other arthropods, small lizards, fruit and seeds. Pairs forage close together in dense foliage, usually within about 3 meters of the ground. Honda, on the Magdalena in northern Tolima, was the first river port of the New Kingdom of Granada and was named a heritage town of Colombia in 2010.
I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/100 sec, f/5.6, ISO 6400, +0.3 EV. IUCN lists the Barred Antshrike as Least Concern, with a stable population.
