Gray Seedeater

The Story

I made this photo of a Gray Seedeater (Sporophila intermedia) at La Macarena, Meta, Colombia. It is found in Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela. In Colombia it lives up to about 2,400 meters. It usually plucks seeds while clinging to grass stems, and it also takes flying insects in mid-air. Its nest is a cup of rootlets and coarse plant fibers lined with finer fibers. The Sierra de la Macarena is home to about 420 bird species, along with eight species of primates. La Macarena is part of the Sierra de la Macarena and of the Macarena Special Management Area, which brings together several protected areas.

I used a Pentax K-1 with the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 for this one, at 1/1250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400. IUCN lists the Gray Seedeater as Least Concern, with a stable population.
