Little Tinamou

The Story

This Little Tinamou (Crypturellus soui) was photographed at Bosque de Niebla Birding & Nature, in the Kilometer 18 cloud forest near Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, at about 2,020 meters. Tinamous are ground birds, and they belong to the palaeognaths, the same ancient group as ostriches and emus. Both sexes are almost tailless, with cinnamon-buff underparts, and the female is usually more brightly colored than the male. Its call is a soft, descending whistled whinny given by both sexes. It lives in Central and South America and on Trinidad. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I photographed it with a Canon R5 and the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L, at 1/125 sec, f/4.5, ISO 12800, −1 EV. Bosque de Niebla Birding & Nature sits at Kilometer 18 in Parcelación El Silencio, La Elvira, and visits are by advance booking.
