Gartered Trogon

The Story

I photographed this Gartered Trogon (Trogon caligatus) in Veracruz, near Hacienda Montecristo outside Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras. It is found from Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. This trogon is the emblem of the local birding club, the Club de Observación de Aves COAS Copán. It eats more fruit than most other trogons, along with many insects, usually hovering to pick fruit and invertebrates from vegetation.

I used a Canon R5 with the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 1.4x extender for this one, at 1/125 sec, f/16, ISO 1600, +1 EV. Santa Rosa de Copán held its first bird festival in August 2022, organized by COAS Copán, and I was glad to take part as a speaker.
