Azure-crowned Hummingbird

La historia

This female Azure-crowned Hummingbird (Saucerottia cyanocephala) was feeding her fledgling in the woodlands of Hacienda Montecristo near Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras, her azure crown bright against the green. The species lives from Mexico to Nicaragua, between about 600 and 2,400 meters. It feeds on nectar from the understory to the forest canopy, although details of its diet are lacking, and it builds a cup nest from whatever materials are available locally. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

I photographed them with a Canon R5 and the RF 800mm f/11 plus the RF 1.4x extender, at 1/60 sec, f/16, ISO 6400, +1 EV. Hacienda Montecristo combines coffee growing with ecotourism and birdwatching, which gives the farm a reason to keep the trees these birds use.
