Scarlet-fronted Parakeet

La historia

On June 18, 2017, I photographed this Scarlet-fronted Parakeet (Psittacara wagleri) near Filandia, Quindío, Colombia. It travels in large flocks and usually forages in the forest canopy for fruit, nuts and seeds. It was placed in the genus Aratinga for a time and has been in Psittacara since about 2013. It lives at the edges of cloud forest, in deciduous and secondary forest, and also in fields, orchards and city parks. The canyon of the Barbas River, on the edge of Filandia, holds about 790 hectares of very humid premontane forest between 1,500 and 2,100 meters.

I used a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM for this one, at 1/1000 sec, f/6.3, ISO 400. IUCN lists the Scarlet-fronted Parakeet as Near Threatened with a decreasing population, and the Barbas-Bremen soil conservation district protects about 4,910 hectares of Filandia and Circasia, including the Barbas canyon.
