La historia
These two Wattled Jacanas (Jacana jacana) were at Reserva Natural Hato Berlín in Trinidad, Casanare, Colombia, on February 10, 2019. Adults are black with a deep maroon back and wings, a red frontal shield and red wattles at the base of the bill, and yellow flight feathers that show when the wings open. Their very long toes spread their weight so they can walk across floating plants. The species is widespread in lowland wetlands across Colombia, including the seasonally flooded savannas of the llanos, and IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
I photographed them with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm at 450mm, at 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100. Hato Berlín is a private nature reserve in the Casanare llanos, and protecting wetlands like these keeps habitat for jacanas and the many other waterbirds that share them.
