Black-fronted Nunbird

La historia

I photographed this Black-fronted Nunbird (Monasa nigrifrons) in La Macarena, Meta, Colombia on July 7, 2017. It is a puffbird about 26 to 29 centimeters long, mostly blue-gray with a blue-black tail and a red bill. It favors trees and bamboo along the edges of rivers and lakes, in flooded várzea and igapó forest and gallery forest. Unlike many other nunbirds it avoids terra firme forest, and it lives from sea level to about 1,000 meters. IUCN lists the species as Least Concern. In 1948 the central part of the Serranía de la Macarena became the first national reserve in Colombia.

I took this with a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. La Macarena is a growing ecotourism destination, and visiting with local guides is one way to support the communities that protect its rivers and forests.
